Dem Tode zum Trotz: Unsterblichkeit und Wiedergeburt in der Phantastik / Defying Death: Immortality and Rebirth in the Fantastic

Dieses Symposium nimmt die Todestage von J. R. R. Tolkien (50.) und C. S. Lewis (60.) und den 40. Jahrestag der Gründung der Inklings-Gesellschaft zum Anlass, die zahlreichen Schnittmengen von Tod, Wiedergeburt und Unsterblichkeit in der Phantastik zu diskutieren. Der Verlust des Lebens und die Frage, wie er verhindert oder rückgängig gemacht werden kann, stehen im Mittelpunkt des menschlichen Interesses und der phantastischen Vorstellung. Phantastische Texte bieten dabei die Möglichkeit, jenseits der Grenzen des Realismus der Idee, wie eine Welt aussehen könnte, in der menschliche und/oder nicht-menschliche Wesen Unsterblichkeit, oder Versionen davon, erfahren, nachzugehen und sich dabei mit Fragen, was die menschliche Seele, die Individualität und die Bedeutung der Existenz über ein einzelnes Leben hinaus eigentlich ausmacht, zu befassen.

International Symposium of the Inklings-Society

This symposium takes the anniversaries of the deaths of J. R. R. Tolkien (50th) and C. S. Lewis (60th) and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the German Inklings Society as a cue to discuss the intersections of death, rebirth and immortality in the fantastic. The loss of life and the questions of how it might be prevented or reversed are at the centre of human concern and the fantastic imagination. In this context, fantastic texts offer the opportunity to explore the idea of what a world in which human and/or non-human beings experience immortality, or versions of it, might look like beyond the limitations of realism. In doing so they address questions about what constitutes the human soul, individuality and the significance of existence beyond a single life.
