Religion, Glaube und Fantastik / Religion, Faith and the Fantastic

Dieses Symposium vereint Beiträge, die sich mit religiösen Thematiken in allen möglichen Genres der Fantastik befassen, u.a. Fantasy, Science Fiction, Graphic Novels, Kinderliteratur, Pixar, Disney oder Miyazaki-Filme. Durch einen starken Fokus auf christozentrische Perspektiven in einer Vielzahl an Mainstream-Literatur und -Medien freuen wir uns insbesondere über nicht-christliche Perspektiven, darunter beispielsweise buddhistische, hinduistische, jüdische oder muslimische Perspektiven in fantastischen Narrativen, wie auch pagane und indigene spirituelle Praktiken sowie neue religiöse Bewegungen. Gleichzeitig freuen wir uns über interdisziplinäre Vorträge zur kritischen Rezeption von Fantastik innerhalb religiöser Gemeinschaften oder auch die Herausbildung von erfunden Religionen mit fantastischen Elementen oder basierend auf fantastischen Narrativen.

This symposium, combines papers that look at religious themes in fantastic genres in any media, including fantasy, sci-fi, graphic novels, children’s literature, Pixar, Disney or Miyazaki films. Due to a strong focus on Christocentric perspectives in a majority of mainstream fantastic literature and media, we are especially looking forward to papers on non-Christian perspectives, including Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim perspectives in fantastic texts and media, pagan and indigenous spiritual practices as well as new religious movements. At the same time, we are also looking forward to interdisciplinary papers on the critical reception of fantastic texts and media within religious communities or the emergence of invented religions featuring fantastical elements or based on fantastic texts respectively.
